The circus is no place for animal abuse. In contrast to the glitter associated with circuses, performing animals' are pretty miserable. Because animals don't naturally ride bicycles, stand on their heads, or jump through rings of fire, whips, electric prods, and other tools are often used to force them to perform.

"We would consider it cruel to confine a dog permanently in a kennel. Yet we visit zoos where hundreds of wild animals are kept permanently in the equivalent of a kennel." ~Virginia McKenna

Zoos engender strong feelings from both advocates and opponents. Because of the complexity of the issues surrounding them, it is problematic to characterize zoos and similar exhibitions of wild animals as a homogenous entity. In reality, rodeos are nothing more than manipulative displays of human domination over animals, thinly disguised as entertainment. What began in the late 1800s as a skill contest among cowboys has become a show motivated by greed and profit.

Every August the town of Omak, Wash., hosts the * Suicide Horse Race * as part of the annual Omak Stampede—a rodeo. Reckless and irresponsible, the race has caused the deaths of 21 horses since 1983.
