Letter to Missy Anne

In Defense of Pitbulls
Whenever hubby got up to leave the room, Missy Anne would follow him. He couldn't go to the kitchen for something without her tagging along. When he went into the bathroom, she would insist that she be allowed to be in there in with him. While he showered, she laid on the bathmat beside the tub and wouldn't leave the room until he did. If hubby went outdoors for some fresh air and left her inside, she would whine and pace back and forth, even if I was in the house with her. She slept stretched out beside him on the bed at night, her body always touching his. The only time she really rested was at night.

Missy Anne would sit on hubby's lap, facing him, with front legs wrapped around his neck as though she were hugging him. When he lay in the recliner, watching TV, she would be on his lap and he'd have a light blanket thrown over her. She cherished the closeness. In the car, from within the back seat, she would put her front paws on the back of the front seat and rest her head on his shoulder, sometimes going along for miles that way.

Missy Anne's favorite game to play was tug-o-war and her favorite toy was anything that squeeked. She would pick up her squeek ball, take it to hubby, drop it in his lap, and then push it with her nose, causing it to squeek and thus letting him know that it was play time. They would then sometimes spend hours, with him throwing it for her and her retrieving it. She never run out of energy. How I wish I had gotten pictures of their play time together...

While Missy Anne was still with us, hubby often said to me that she had been a powerful force in his recovery from the accident. He always told others the same.
She was comfort and company...she was sympathetic and caring...she was loving and attentive.

One day as we were out and about (and had Missy Anne with us, of course), we stopped by a boat dock on the river to allow her to play and get cool. The waves were licking at the dock and Missy Anne was having so much fun in trying to "catch" the waves in her mouth. We laughed hysterically at her antics. Suddenly a wave came in and knocked Missy from the end of the dock. She went tumbling into the water. Hubby immediately jumped into the water to save her, but he had only the use of one leg and was unable to swim. We searched the water from the dock, but it was deep and unforgiving. We searched for over an hour and finally had to admit to ourselves that she was gone. For days on end, we went to that dock to look. Finally, the water receded enough that we were able to see to the bottom and go under the dock. Missy was not there. The horror of her sudden dispappearance was like a nightmare. Hubby and I both cried ourselves to sleep for weeks. We both have had many dogs - in our years growing up and in being together - but we loved her more than any of the others. I don't feel guilty in admitting that because I truly believe that's the way it was supposed to be.

The next day after her disappearance, when we went to search once more for Missy, I placed there a small bouquet of silk flowers in hopes that it would stand as a Iasting memorial. On our next visit, we discovered the flowers were gone. I sadly stood there, wishing that I could leave something for her. I looked down and saw a penny laying on the ground. I picked it up and tossed it into the water and it was then that I was immediately reminded of the "Pennies From Heaven" poem, which I have read numerous times...

I found a penny today
Just laying on the ground
But it's not just a penny
This little coin I've found.

Found pennies come from Heaven
That's what my grandpa told me,
He said, "Angels toss them down."
Oh, how I loved that story.

He said, "When an angel misses you
They toss a penny down
Sometimes just to cheer you up
To make a smile out of your frown."

So don't pass by that penny
When you're feeling blue,
It may be a penny from Heaven
That an angel tossed to you.

So now, each time we visit our little girl, hubby and I both toss a penny into the water at the place where Missy Anne vanished

I have always believed in angels and I believe they come to us in various forms here on earth. I believe Missy Anne was an angel. I believe she was sent into our lives when we needed a guardian angel the most. One may scoff at my way of thinking, but we do know that we were given Missy Anne for a special reason and we know that no other pet has loved us in the way she did. She was unlike any others that we've shared our lives with.

"She has taught me to love and her purpose was fulfilled."
